Job Description

Title:                                  : Machinist (Apprentice)

Reports to                        : Shop Supervisor

Direct reports                  : N/A

                                                        
Overview:

The primary responsibility of the Machinist Apprentice is assisting with the set up and operation of machine tools and equipment to produce precision parts and components required on projects. The Machinist Apprentice will be responsible for ensuring all work that has been assigned is completed safely and to the correct quality and specification on time so that delivery dates can be achieved.

  • Following safety guidelines with PPE and operation of equipment
  • Ensure projects are completed to IRCO Quality standards
  • Completing work according to deadlines given by Shop Supervisor
  • Learning skillset required for apprentice program

Main Duties

  • Ensure all work related functions are completed according to IRCO’s Health & Safety policies as per the OHSA rules and regulations
  • Review blue prints & building plans to fully understand all parts that are to be machined for the project
  • Report to the Shop supervisor all parts that are required to be purchased for the assembly of the component within the required schedule
  • Assist in the calculation of dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and verniers calipers
  • Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, or grinders
  • Measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications
  • Assisting in determining the most efficient and safe machining sequence
  • Assist ensuring that project deadlines are achieved and project schedules are maintained
  • Providing daily support to the work groups upon Shop Supervisor’s requirements
  • Assist in the inspection of weldments to ensure that it meets specifications and quality standards
  • Collect and inspect all component parts to be machined or rebuilt
  • Report to Shop Supervisor any problems or delays
  • Assist in the shipping and crating of machinery for shipping as required
  • Report to the Shop Supervisor when more efficient methods of production can be identified
  • Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment in order to diagnose machine malfunctions, and to determine need for adjustments or repairs
  • Maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures
  • Ensure machined parts fit together for the assembly and fabrication teams
  • Ensure all projects are completed with-in the budgeted amount of costs and time
  • Track and record all change orders, reworks, and cost over-runs, as it pertains to a project, reconcile all information to be entered into the data collection system
  • Ensure workplace is maintained in a clean and tidy manner
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Shop Supervisor
